"The devil is your own personal
ego."
from ITS - Inner True Self ITS Chapter 06 On Evil Etc
by Daren Caldwell
I wrote that Divinely Inspired booklet 20 years ago, yet I only recently realized the full
impact and scope of that statement. Life is like that.
Spiritual healers, using metaphysical science, tell
us over and over again that the appearance in our lives of evil, sin, disease, poverty, lack
of any kind, anger, fear, etc. is caused by our separateness from God.
We hear over and over again that God Is within us and without
us. Permeating everything and containing everything. Including our minds and hearts. So what is
stopping us from making contact with God?
Our individual egos are stopping us. Our very own,
self-exalting egos. My ego works very very hard to prevent me from contacting God. Your ego works
very very hard to prevent you from contacting God. Everyone's ego works very very hard to
prevent them from contacting God. The ego is a very skilful and untiring worker. (We could all take
a lesson from it in that regard.) Unfortunately, your ego is bound and determined to both
demoralize you and finally kill you.
The ego is constantly introducing / inserting thoughts / ideas
/ feelings into our minds. It continually and continuously tries to
convince us that if we follow these suggestions, we will be happy.
They are always ideas of physical, emotional, or mental pleasure of some
form or other. Then, when we DO follow it's lead, and the pleasure
inevitably turns sour, the ego scorns us and convinces us to
feel like painful stupid idiots. It then immediately starts this
demoralizing cycle over again. And we get sucked in again and again and
again.
The other side of the story concerns the
mechanism of karma - as you sow, so shall you reap. This is true of what
we keep in our minds and feelings as well, and because we go through the
pleasure/pain cycle so many times, disease and death tend to manifest
in our lives. BUT when you can truly see this happening in your own life,
it actually becomes funny. Humourous. Laughable. Because when the ego
kills you, it kills itself. Your ego is suicidal. And when you start to admit what's going on in your mind
with your ego, then you're on your way to freeing yourself of it's
influence.
When we come to a point in our life where we find
out what we are doing to ourselves, and as we become AWARE of our ego's activities and that we
actually can CHOOSE what thoughts and feelings to accept and 'grow' in our
minds, then and only then are we on our way to successful
fulfilled living.
